Arianne Navarre-Marie, daughter of Chagossians, sworn in as Deputy PM
Arianne Navarre-Marie, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Wellbeing, takes the oath of office as Deputy Prime Minister this Wednesday morning at State House, succeeding Paul Bérenger who resigned from government and from the Mouvement Militant Mauricien.
Born to Chagossian parents and raised in Port Louis, she first entered parliament in 1982 as part of the historic 60-0 wave and has been the elected member for constituency No. 1 since 2024. Between 2000 and 2005 she pushed through reforms on domestic violence and women's rights. Her profile is one of those rare political careers built almost entirely on the ground rather than behind a desk.
Three elections, two 60-0 sweeps, one Chagossian father — and now No. 2 in government.
A 27-year-old found dead in his Beau-Bassin prison cell. His family wants answers.
Jeff Axel Perrine was discovered dead on the morning of May 1st, seated on his bed with his face tilted toward the floor and a piece of paper in his right hand. His family says the prison doctor confirmed death at 8:33 that morning. He was 27, from Notre-Dame, Montagne-Longue.
No cause of death has been officially announced. His relatives are demanding transparency and justice, and the case raises, again, the question of what happens inside Beau-Bassin central prison when no one is watching.
Silver Bank depositors will receive up to Rs 300,000 in state compensation
Eligible resident depositors at the now-defunct Silver Bank will be reimbursed up to Rs 300,000 under the scheme run by the MDIC, the Mauritius Deposit Insurance Corporation, which confirmed the payout after the bank's licence was revoked. For households who kept their savings there, partial relief at best — the ceiling catches most ordinary accounts but leaves anyone with larger deposits well short.
IMF visits Mauritius and leaves with a warning: growth to slow to 2.8% this year
An IMF team spent two weeks on the island, wrapping up on May 4, and its headline finding is blunt: economic growth is projected to slow to 2.8% in 2026, dragged down by the Middle East conflict hitting tourism. That is a sharp drop from recent years. Public sector debt now sits at 89.5% of GDP and the country has limited room to absorb further shocks — the Fund's broader message, politely put.
