Evaco goes into receivership with 350 jobs hanging in the balance

One of the island's biggest property developers just fell over. Evaco Ltd, a listed builder of high-end homes that has been in business for 24 years, was placed under receivership on the evening of Thursday 28 May, the Stock Exchange of Mauritius confirmed. Mushtaq Oosman and John Chung were appointed Receiver and Manager to try to keep the company alive.

Around 350 staff are caught in it. Several people close to the file say they have not been paid since April. The trigger came from another wounded lender: Silver Bank, itself under administration, sent Evaco a letter on 25 May demanding immediate repayment of Rs 39,684,383.

The bank wrote that it had no alternative but to recall the facilities and ask for settlement of the overdue amount. No deadline was set in writing. A struggling bank pulling the plug on a struggling developer is the kind of chain reaction regulators dread, and this one has a payroll attached.

A bank in receivership forcing a developer into receivership is the financial equivalent of a drowning man grabbing a swimmer.

Casino used as a laundromat for Britain's retired banknotes

Nitesh Ramdhary, 43, of Triolet, was arrested at Plaisance airport on 25 May. Police in the North call him the brain behind a scheme that fed old pound sterling notes, withdrawn by the Bank of England in September 2022, back into the economy.

The method was almost elegant. His alleged accomplice, casino employee Nishal S., slid the dead notes into slot machines, placed a quick bet, cashed the receipts, and walked out with clean rupees. Records show £2,000, worth Rs 120,800, run through that way. Both face a provisional charge of using counterfeit banknotes.
