One weekend, two ADSU raids, a wall of synthetic drugs
A 20-year-old was arrested Monday at Residence Barkly in Beau-Bassin after the drug squad's patrol team seized 342 doses of synthetic drugs and Rs 2,775 in suspected sale money.
Two days earlier the same unit hit Roche-Bois twice. One search turned up cannabis resin in a metal box. Hours later, a second home gave up 178 foil sachets of methamphetamine and 96 of heroin, nearly 21 grams of hard drugs in all. Three men, all of them in their twenties, are now in custody and under investigation for trafficking.
A losing bidder takes a road-sign contract to the financial police
Abdullah Moossun, a shareholder in a rival signage firm, walked into the Financial Crimes Commission with his lawyer Rama Valayden and a dossier. His complaint: that a Rs 10 million road-signage tender at the Ministry of Transport was awarded irregularly, and that some of the signs now going up are counterfeit.
The contract was greenlit on 9 March. The ministry says it cooperates. By 28 May the island had logged 57 road deaths this year, more than any full year since 2023.
South Africans cleared a Trou-aux-Biches block in 30 minutes
Thirty-six luxury apartments in Trou-aux-Biches sold out in half an hour, with South African buyers putting down Rs 285.7 million. More than 10,000 South Africans now live here permanently, drawn by a 20% tax ceiling against the 45% they face at home and no tax on capital gains, dividends, or inheritance.
Hospital overtime gets paid before the July walkout starts
Health staff who threatened to stop overtime from July will be paid in June instead. A circular from Jeetoo Hospital says certified overtime claims through end-May must reach finance by 5 June, with cabinet's sign-off and the money now available.
