Rs 150 TV fee stays because the broadcaster is drowning in debt
That Rs 150 stuck to your electricity bill every month is not going anywhere. PM Ramgoolam told Parliament the plan to scrap the television licence fee is postponed, because the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation is sitting on a Rs 1.5 billion accumulated deficit.
PM Ramgoolam said the new administration found the MBC carrying Rs 165.5 million in debt and an estimated Rs 1.8 billion in pension obligations on top of that. The fee has ridden on domestic power bills since 1984. Killing it now, he argued, would sink the broadcaster.
