He told police they were due to marry next year, then dealt 22 knife blows

Prageena Jootun was 23. On Friday morning she was stabbed 22 times at Les Salines, on the southern edge of Port Louis, after what police describe as a jealous quarrel with her partner.

Her partner, Mavin Changia, 29, was caught soon after in a wooded patch near the beach by the Port Louis South criminal squad. An autopsy traced her death to the wounds. In his confession he told officers, in Creole, that the two had planned to marry next year.

Changia answered a provisional murder charge at the Weekend Court on Saturday and was sent back to a cell under escort. The Major Crimes Investigation Team, the police unit that handles the island's most serious cases, has taken over the file. He claims the row started over accusations of infidelity on both sides, and says she came at him with the knife first before things spiralled out of control.

Three women have now died in domestic stabbings reported in barely a fortnight on the island.
