Cabinet tightens borders as 49,631 migrant workers prop up the economy
Cabinet has noted that 49,631 foreign workers are now employed in Mauritius, mostly in sectors short of local labour. The largest sources are India, Nepal, Madagascar and Bangladesh.
Concern has built over illegal recruitment and over workers who vanish soon after arriving. The Labour Ministry has agreed a memorandum with Bangladesh to set up a single state body to channel all recruitment, the model already run with India.
The target is the private middlemen accused of charging excessive fees. A state-to-state channel removes the broker; whether it removes the abuse is the part worth watching.

New safety rules land for the country's refuse collectors
Cabinet has cleared new Occupational Safety and Health Regulations for waste collection, a job that rarely makes the agenda until someone is hurt. The rules require risk assessments, protective gear, separate cabins on the trucks and specific arrangements for pregnant women. The test is the inspection that follows, not the gazette.
