Ravatomanga bids again for bail in the Rs 7.4 billion laundering case
Mamy Ravatomanga is trying again. The Malagasy businessman, held over the alleged laundering of Rs 7.4 billion, asked the Bail and Remand Court for release, arguing that seven months in custody with no end date shreds the presumption of innocence. His lawyers note the Financial Crimes Commission promised back in February to close its inquiry within three months, and still has not.
Appearing by video from the maximum security prison at Melrose, Ravatomanga leaned on his fragile health and his fears for his safety inside. The court rules on 20 July.
Phoenix pet shop case widens after remains found at a second site
The cruelty case against a Phoenix pet shop just grew a second address. Acting on a fresh tip, inspectors from the animal welfare society and police searched another premises linked to the same owner and found remains of dead animals, along with signs that live ones had been kept there too.
The owner, already arrested after the 28 June raid that sealed the original shop, was called to the scene. Under the Animal Welfare Act, cruelty is a criminal offence, not a fine to shrug off.
