A bathroom water heater takes the life of a newlywed of 24
A bathroom water heater has taken another life. Omeshwaree Anthony, a 24-year-old newlywed her family knew as Vedna, died in intensive care after suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at her home in Camp-de-Masque. Police have opened an investigation.
Gas heaters in poorly ventilated bathrooms are a known and preventable killer, and this is not the island's first such death. The fix is cheap. Ventilation, a serviced unit, and a flue that vents outside, none of it glamorous, all of it life or death.
Alteo and C-Care bet Rs 550 million on a clinic for the East
Rs 550 million will build a private clinic at Bonne-Mère, in Flacq, a joint venture by Alteo Agri and C-Care that will run as C-Care Flacq. It rises on a 12,028 m2 plot beside the A7, near the planned Mall de Flacq and the M4 bypass.
Plans show 51 patient rooms, four intensive-care beds, an operating theatre and an emergency department, aimed at eastern region long thin on private healthcare. It rises over three floors, with parking for 70 and bays set aside for ambulances.
A ward in the East is overdue; the bill patients pay will decide if it lands.
Plastic surgeon found guilty of assaulting a policewoman
A plastic surgeon, Dr Nishan Moheeputh, 46, was found guilty of indecent assault on a policewoman who was 29 at the time, over a 2022 visit to his private clinic. Magistrate Jade Ngan Chai King found her account consistent across nine witnesses. He denied everything. Sentencing falls on 13 July.
A marshmallow takes the life of a 2-year-old in Sodnac
Azrael Sournoise, two years old and the youngest of four, died on Monday after choking on a marshmallow at home in Sodnac. His parents rushed him to Victoria Hospital, where doctors could not save him; an autopsy found pulmonary oedema. "We lost a prince," his father, Emmanuel Sournoise, said. A police inquiry is open.
