PM weighs pulling Mauritius Post back under the state
Mauritius Post could return to full state hands. PM Ramgoolam is weighing every option to protect the postal service, renationalisation included, after staff unions staged a peaceful protest over the direction the company was taking.
The signal came after PM Ramgoolam spoke directly with union leaders. Postal services everywhere are squeezed between shrinking letter volumes and the promise to reach every village at the same price, and Mauritius Post is no exception. What a buy-back would cost the taxpayer, and what exactly it fixes, nobody has spelled out yet.
Fuel oil spills at the port as a pipeline springs a leak
About 200 litres of heavy fuel oil leaked into the water at Port Louis harbour on Tuesday, from a pipeline run by Indian Oil.
The Ports Authority triggered the harbour oil-spill plan within the hour. Absorbent booms went out, a clamp choked off the flow, the Environment Police opened an inquiry into who is to blame. Two hundred litres is small; the speed of the response is what the next, bigger leak will test.
