Family believed him cremated; his body lay in the Flacq morgue for months
Stéphanie Thomas held a death certificate for her brother, Jean-Noël Thomas, and believed he had already been cremated. On 26 June, police called her to the morgue at Dr Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq to identify his body. "I was looking at this body, but I could not recognise my brother," she told reporters.
She describes a strong smell of decomposition, attendants in only a basic mask and gloves, and a room that felt closer to ambient than cold. Eight months after she thought she had buried her grief, the family is left with hard questions about how unclaimed bodies are kept, and who checks.
