New unit under the PM's office to chase project delays and overruns
PM Ramgoolam told Parliament on Tuesday that the government will set up a Project Monitoring and Implementation Unit, the PMIU, attached to his own office to speed up big infrastructure works and rein in delays and cost overruns.
Answering the MP Joanna Bérenger, PM Ramgoolam said the hard part is no longer writing policy but delivering it, blaming fragmented responsibilities, slow procedures and the absence of a single authority tracking projects across government. Whether a new cell fixes what old structures could not is the test worth watching.
Court keeps the freeze on an ACP's houses in the Reward Money case
The Supreme Court has refused to lift the freeze, sought last year by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC), on three properties and a Toyota RAV4 belonging to Assistant Commissioner of Police Lilram Deal and his wife.
Judge Jane Lau Yuk Poon ruled on 31 July that reasonable grounds still exist to suspect the assets came from crime. Rs 31.5 million reached ACP Deal in 63 payments of Rs 500,000; he admits taking it but denies it is reward money, invoking national security on its source.
