A gun goes off at the SMF's own headquarters, wounding an officer
A Special Mobile Force officer took a gunshot to the arm on Wednesday morning inside the unit's own headquarters at Vacoas. The Special Mobile Force (SMF) is the paramilitary wing of the police. It went off as one officer handed his firearm to another heading out for sentry duty.
Colleagues rushed him to Victoria Hospital in Candos, where his condition is judged stable. Police have opened an investigation into how a routine handover ended with a bullet, and the Police Press Office has stepped in to walk through what happened.
No rate cut this month as the Bank of Mauritius holds at 4.75%
The Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously to leave the key rate at 4.75%, so loan repayments will not ease just yet. Governor Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor framed the hold as caution: inflation ran at 4.4% in July, growth sits at about 2.8% for 2026, and May's 25 basis point rise is still working through the system.
