Mauritius quietly adds 145,000 km² of seabed to its map
A United Nations commission has signed off on Mauritius's claim to more than 145,000 km² of extra seabed, an area more than seventy times the size of the island itself, most of it deep ocean floor. The approval covers a submission the country lodged back in July 2024.
Former PM Pravind Jugnauth, whose government prepared the file, called it a turning point for the country's sovereignty and its economic future. What lies under that water, from fishing grounds to seabed minerals, is now Mauritius's to map and, one day, to tap.
Mauritius tightens its borders as Ebola worsens in Central Africa
Health authorities are telling Mauritians to put off non-essential trips to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, where Ebola is gaining ground. Anyone arriving after time in either country now faces up to 21 days in quarantine, and foreign nationals who passed through them in the previous three weeks cannot enter for now.
Officials have tightened checks at airport and the port. The measures run until 7 September, and can be extended if the outbreak keeps spreading.
Consumers urge caution on the north's desalination plan
A desalination plant is planned for the north to ease water shortages, Assirvaden told the National Assembly. Consumer association ACIM is urging caution: its secretary Jayen Chellum says the island loses about 60% of its water to old, leaking pipes, and that fixing those would beat a costly plant. Mauritius has water stress, he argues, not drought.
New vehicle registrations fall by a third in seven months
