Convict in the Jhurry murders found hanged in his cell
Guards found Avinash Ramgotee, 43, hanged in his cell at Melrose prison on Saturday. Early findings suggest he tore a bedsheet and used it to end his life. An inquiry into the death opened the same day. The circumstances still have to be established.
Ramgotee was serving a sentence of 37 years for the 2006 killing of Indira and Asha Jhurry, two women related by marriage, at Lallmatie. A judge handed down that sentence in May 2013. He had lived only a short walk from the family, in the same village where the women died.
Retiree accuses her nephew, a police officer, of taking Rs 1.3 million
Rs 1,265,200 is the sum a retiree of 66 says slipped into her nephew's hands over the years, and she has now reported it to Rose-Belle police. Her nephew, a serving police officer of 47, has not been charged.
She left Mauritius for France in 1982 but kept a joint account at home with her sister. Withdrawals began in 2018: Rs 125,000 for the officer's house, then Rs 140,000, then Rs 623,000 in 2021, each on a promise to repay. After her sister died in 2023, cash kept at home went missing too.
A Reunion harvester joins the fight for smallholder cane
Mauritius has begun practical training on the Koupez Pei cane harvester, a machine brought in from La Reunion to ease a biting labour shortage in its smallholder sugar sector. Planters behind the island's roughly 200,000 tonnes of smallholder cane have watched output slide as cutters grow scarce. The pitch: mechanise the harvest, or watch fields go fallow.
Plaza reopening hangs on a private funding deal
The Plaza, the grand old theatre in Beau-Bassin Rose-Hill, will keep its doors shut a while longer. Mayor Louis Toussaint Andre says the council is weighing a partnership with private investors to cover the cost of reopening, rather than lean on the town's stretched budget.
