Newborn in intensive care as mother alleges negligence at Jeetoo
Her newborn son is in neonatal intensive care, and his mother, 26, wants to know why. She has lodged a negligence complaint at Line Barracks over her delivery at Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital on 13 August.
Admitted on 9 August, she says during labour she asked for a caesarean, but staff told her she would deliver normally, and that a midwife pushed the baby's head back and told her to stop pushing. The boy arrived at 4.20 pm with a weak cry.
A day later, she says, a paediatrician told her the baby had two clots on the head, bleeding on the brain and trouble breathing. Police have opened an inquiry.
A stone crusher looms over Nouvelle Découverte's fields
Nouvelle Découverte is a village of vegetable planters, and its fields may soon sit beside a stone crusher. Atma Bumma, whose family has farmed there for decades, has formally opposed a licence for a mobile crusher proposed by Dove Transport.
The plant would grind about 450 tonnes of aggregate a day, run on a diesel generator, and raise dust, noise and risk of tainted groundwater, he argues. His point is blunt. The problem is the choice of site, not whatever conditions get bolted on later.
