FCC corners Muzzafar Lallmamode in a Calodyne bungalow

Muzzafar Lallmamode spent Thursday as a wanted man and Friday afternoon in handcuffs. Officers found him inside a bungalow at Calodyne, near Grand-Gaube, and arrested a second man alongside him. Four of his vehicles were seized on the spot. The manhunt was short.

The Financial Crimes Commission, the body that chases dirty money, had been hunting him since Thursday over the alleged laundering of cash from illicit sources. During the search the team also turned up cannabis and a second substance they suspect is a drug, which pushes the case past the paper trail and into something the ADSU can weigh on a scale.

A joint squad from the police, the FCC and the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit ran the operation at Grand-Gaube. Seized cars make an easy photograph. The harder task starts now, tying the money to a name that a court will accept, because four vehicles in a yard prove wealth but not yet a crime.

Nearly Rs 150 million in drugs did not make it past Plaisance Airport. Officers from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit intercepted the load on Thursday, pulling 20 kilograms of cannabis and another 15 kilograms of suspected drugs out of it. Police arrested two men.

The value alone tells you this was not a courier topping up pocket money, someone further up the chain planned it and fronted the cash. The two now in custody are the easy catch; the unit will be far more interested in the names sitting above them.
