Etihad eyes Mauritius as a new aviation council takes shape
Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways has signalled it wants to fly to Mauritius, and PM Ramgoolam wants a body ready to weigh offers like it. After an hour with Airport Holdings and Air Mauritius, he announced a new National Aviation Council to steer air-access policy and plot a long-term strategy.
The council would gather specialists to balance aims that usually pull apart: opening new markets, protecting the national carrier, and making each route earn a real return. The offers are lining up. Officials say Etihad's interest already reaches beyond one link toward a wider tourism and business deal.
New routes are the easy part; keeping Air Mauritius solvent while the skies open is the hard one.
1,723 seasonal workers have filed complaints since 2022
Since 2022, seasonal workers across Mauritius have lodged 1,723 complaints with the Labour Ministry, Minister Reza Uteem told Parliament, covering the people hired for a harvest, a hotel high season, or a short contract and then dropped when the work runs out.
Uteem read the number as proof the system is being used, not that it has broken. Still, four years of complaints points less to a working safety net than to how exposed anyone without a permanent job really is.
