FCC traces Rs 720 million in dirty cash to a network of borrowed ID cards

Rs 30 million a month. Converted into dollars and euros, then gone. Over two years that adds up to roughly Rs 720 million, the sum the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) now says moved through a foreign exchange circuit it believes carried laundered drug money.

Investigators say the operation leaned on ordinary people with no criminal record. Their national identity cards bought the dollars and euros, in return for small commission. Part of the money then moved abroad through a hawala network, the informal system that settles debts between brokers rather than pushing cash through banks.

Dubai, Thailand and the United Kingdom are among the destinations under examination, along with the use of stablecoins to blur the trail. For now the tally is only an estimate. The real test is whether the FCC can name who collected at the other end.

A system built to leave no paper trail is a strange thing to expect a paper trail from.
