Nine injured as a lorry's brakes fail on the Pailles motorway
Nine people went to hospital after a lorry loaded with iron bars ploughed into a bus, a van and two cars on the motorway at Guibies, Pailles, on Wednesday afternoon. Its brakes reportedly gave way around 14:15 and the truck crossed into the opposite lane, leaving one car in a roadside drain and traffic toward Port Louis were blocked for hours.
"I keep replaying the impact," one victim said from his hospital bed, recalling how the lorry hit him from behind and spun his car into the concrete barrier. Ambulances took all nine to Jeetoo hospital. Police blame the brakes.
65 complaints later, the Cancer Centre gets 60 new nurses
The National Cancer Centre has logged 65 patient complaints since January, 57 have now been resolved. Health Minister Anil Bachoo told the National Assembly the ministry will recruit 60 specialist nurses to ease the staff shortages and heavy workload sitting behind most of them.
Bachoo said charge nurses already run regular ward rounds to track patients and keep the care plan coordinated. MP Rubna Daureeawo had pressed him on staffing levels, the nature of the complaints and palliative care.
Sixty nurses is a real answer; the test is whether that complaints line shortens by January.
