The Pailles truck that hit nine people had no valid fitness papers
Nine people were hurt when a lorry hauling steel bars lost its brakes on the M1 at Pailles on Wednesday and ploughed through a line of vehicles. Checks since then found the truck's fitness certificate had expired on 19 June; the trailer's had lapsed back in January 2021, and it carried no valid insurance.
Transport Minister Osman Mahomed called it an irresponsible act. He wants justice for the injured. He is also weighing a ban on heavy vehicles using the motorway during the afternoon rush, a change he plans to raise with the police soon.
A lorry that had no business being on the road is the fact that will shape this case.
