IMF wants budget discipline written into Mauritian law
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has a blunt message for Mauritius: put budget discipline into law. Its latest technical assistance report, dated May and released this week, warns that fiscal outcomes have weakened markedly since the pandemic, with public debt rising, deficits widening and fiscal risks piling up.
The remedy it presses is a Fiscal Responsibility Bill, backed by institutions to enforce it. The Fund credits decades of prudent management, then says the recent record has slipped. Writing the law is easy part. Holding the line through a full election cycle is the real exam.
Sword attack leaves two officers wounded on a Flacq drug raid
Two officers from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) were slashed with a sword and badly hurt during a raid in Flacq on Wednesday, News Moris reports.
They were part of a team searching for drugs when the man turned on them with the blade. Medics rushed both to hospital. A raid on street dealers is routine; one that ends with police under a sword is not, and it puts the spotlight back on how these teams get cover when a search turns violent.
