School rolls shrink again as 4,129 pupils vanish from secondary
Secondary schools have shed 4,129 pupils in a single year, and the drop runs right across the system. Fold in pre-primary and primary and the total fall reaches 5,357 children between two March counts, according to the Education Statistics 2026 from Statistics Mauritius.
Stretch the lens to three years and roughly 6,500 pupils have gone. The trend is not new. Fewer births and new training routes explains part of the slide, but a classroom that keeps emptying is a planning problem no minister can wish away.
Central bank digs into its dollars again to steady the rupee
The Bank of Mauritius sold another 15 million dollars on the currency market on Thursday, its latest move to stop the rupee sliding further. That pushes its dollar sales past 95 million since January. The reserves are finite.
Mauritius lands a small US sugar quota for 2027
Washington has handed Mauritius 813 tonnes of raw sugar inside its US tariff quota for 2027, the trade office confirmed. It is a modest slice, yet a guaranteed one, and for a sugar industry long past its peak every tonne shipped into the American market still counts.
