Police boot contract survives a losing bidder's challenge
Rs 21.45 million buys a lot of boots, 26,000 pairs of Derby shoes for police officers and sergeants, at Rs 825 a pair. A losing bidder tried to undo the award. It failed. The Independent Review Panel threw out Knight Trading's challenge to the contract, which went to Banker Shoes.
Knight Trading argued the winning sole was PVC, not the rubber the tender demanded. Banker Shoes produced an independent lab certificate saying rubber. It went unchallenged. The panel said policing the factory floor was not its job.
Melrose inmate of 78 says fellow prisoners assaulted him
An inmate aged 78 at Melrose prison has told police that two fellow prisoners sexually assaulted him while the three sat in the prison hospital. The complaint has gone to Montagne-Blanche police, an investigation is now open.
The man is serving a sentence of 35 years that a court imposed in 2013. The question the complaint forces is a basic one: who keeps prisoners safe from each other inside a jail the state runs?
