Triolet strangling: a confession points at the victim's brother
Ten days after someone strangled Saraswattee Mootia, 60, in her vegetable field at Triolet, her son's wife has admitted a role in the killing. Khoosboo Mootia, 29, told the Major Crime Investigation Team she asked her lover, Satayama Tany, known as Pritam, 53, to kill the older woman.
Pritam is the victim's own brother. Khoosboo Mootia said she had come to see Saraswattee Mootia as an obstacle to that relationship, and walked investigators through a reconstruction at Grand-Baie. Her account now goes up against that of another suspect held since 20 September.
Import prices jump 20% as the trade gap widens
Twenty percent. That is how far the import price index climbed in the second quarter against the first, Statistics Mauritius reports. Imports cost more, the trade deficit keeps stretching over the year.
For an island that ships in most of what it eats and burns, the number lands straight on household budgets. A softer rupee makes each cargo dearer before it reaches a single shelf, and the latest quarter offers no sign of relief ahead.
Pump prices grab the headlines; the import bill is the quieter squeeze.

The price of cutting fuel taxes: no free bus rides, dearer rice
Petrol now sells at Rs 77.70 and diesel at Rs 78.35 after Tuesday's 10% rise. Pressed to scrap the taxes behind those pumps, a minister spelled out the swap: free travel for students and seniors would end, and staples like ration rice and cooking gas could more than double. Relief is never free.
Take a rupee off the pump and it resurfaces on the bus fare or the rice bag.
