Lawyers vote as one to slow the crime agency bill
Mauritius's lawyers want the brakes applied. At a special general meeting on Friday, the Mauritius Bar Association voted unanimously to ask the government not to rush the National Crime Agency Bill, the law that would stand up a new investigative body, the NCA.
A resolution from Senior Counsel Rama Valayden pressed for wider debate and deeper consultation before the bill moves. Secretary Yatin Varma said the worries centre on the agency's powers, its independence, and the safeguards around how it would actually work.
Fuel and power bills are squeezing factories to the edge
From corner SMEs to the big groups, companies say their margins have run out. A generalised surge in fuel, electricity and raw input prices is reshaping the cost base faster than firms can pass it on, and the small and medium enterprises that employ much of the island are the most exposed.
Friday underlined how fragile the supply is. Unplanned outages hit Pereybere and La Marie, with Central Electricity Board crews sent to restore power through the afternoon.
When the grid itself flickers, the cost squeeze stops being a line on a spreadsheet.

Rebased accounts make the economy look bigger than thought
Statistics Mauritius has revised the country's GDP upward after rebasing its national accounts, the technical reset that refreshes what gets counted and how. The new baseline folds in fresher data, newer international standards, and the merchanting trade booked through Global Business Companies, the GBCs that route global deals through Mauritius.
A bigger baseline flatters every ratio from debt to deficit, with not a single extra rupee earned.
