More than 200 tin shacks cling to the slope above Cité La Cure
On the mountainside at Cité La Cure, out of sight and quiet, more than a thousand Mauritians live in over 200 tin shacks that have served as homes for years. The calm hides conditions described as inhumane: metal walls that bake in summer, scant services, families raising children a short drive from Port Louis. These shacks sit inside the capital's own backyard, where the housing debate rarely reaches. Some families have counted a generation here, waiting on a plan that never lands. They are not temporary. That is the point.
Three Total stations move to swap local pump staff for foreign hires
Around fifty pumpers and shop assistants at the Flic-en-Flac, Belle-Vue and Rainbow TotalEnergies stations are set to be replaced by workers from South Asia. Their contractor, Petroserv, lost its deal, and a letter told staff their services would not be needed once the stations convert. About 700 regular customers signed a petition praising the all-Mauritian crew they have known for years. The firm blames a shortage of local labour, the clients plainly do not buy it.

The hotel group Attitude has again been certified Mauritius's Best Workplace, the fifth year running. The badge, from the Great Place to Work institute, rests on anonymous staff surveys on trust, fairness and pride at work. For a tourism sector leaning hard on foreign hires, a local operator holding that label is its own quiet headline.
