Mauritius and Saudi Arabia line up a gas plant of up to 500 MW
Mauritius has signed an energy accord with Saudi Arabia that points toward a liquefied natural gas power station of 250 to 500 megawatts, plus an 80 MW gas turbine and longer-term Saudi investment in energy infrastructure. The memorandum was signed in Riyadh on 12 October.
It is still a memorandum, not a contract to build, so the megawatts are a plan rather than a promise. Mauritius also thanked Riyadh for help channelled through the Saudi Fund for Development. After a week when the grid and the taps dominated talk, a firm new baseload supply matters long after the headlines moves on.
A video of an officer at a Mapou crash puts a minister on the record
A clip shared widely on Saturday shows a uniformed officer behaving oddly after a crash at the Mapou roundabout about 06:30. The officer failed a breathalyser test.
Minister Osman Mahomed, who represents the area, said he had seen the video and promised that charges would follow. With police conduct already under a harsh public light, a serving officer over the limit at a crash scene is not something the force can let sit. What counts is whether the promised prosecution reaches a courtroom.
New residence rules attached to the pension at 61
Cabinet has approved new residence conditions for the basic retirement pension at 61. The decision sets how long a beneficiary must have lived in the country to qualify, a detail that matters most to returning migrants and the diaspora. On a universal pension this large, who qualifies, and from when, is never a small question.
Before lowering the age of guilt to 12, a committee first
Rather than move straight to a lower age of criminal responsibility, Cabinet will hold wider consultations and table a motion for a select committee. Only then will it decide whether to drop the age from 14 to 12. The idea surfaced after minors turned up among those held over the riots, and child-rights professionals have argued hard against it.
