Transport drives another rise in building costs
Building a house costs more. Again. Statistics Mauritius put its Construction Price Index up 1.4% in the third quarter, in a report out on Wednesday. Bitumen, paint and waterproofing products posted the sharpest rises, several of them in double digits.
Materials are only half the story, transport is the other. Moving everything to a site has climbed too, and that feeds straight into the quote a contractor hands you. The quote keeps moving. For anyone building right now, the price agreed in January is already out of date.
Household builders feel this first, long before any index does.
Duval wants an attempted murder charge over the Elodie Thomas shooting
Opposition MP Adrien Duval wants the officer who shot Elodie Thomas charged with attempted murder. The IPCC, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, questioned Sergeant Gowtamsing Taukoor again on Wednesday as it digs into the shooting. Duval argues the charge now on file does not match a woman being hit by live fire, and he says the gap tells its own story about how such cases move. Investigation is still open. Where it lands, nobody official will yet say.

It will instead award assessed grades, the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES) said on Thursday. The board promises no candidate loses out. Thousands of pupils now wait to learn how a grade turns up for a paper they never sat.
