Suspended officer stays jailed over a Rs 61 million drug plot from France
A suspended police officer will stay behind bars over an alleged plot to import more than Rs 61 million of drugs from France. Bail was the question. The court said no.
The Bail and Remand Court turned down bail for Neeraj Pagoo, 35, of Rose-Belle, accused with a French national of conspiring to run the haul through the airport back in March. Investigators place him behind the immigration counter, working his phone, as the French passenger cleared arrivals. The officer leading the case warned of real risks: flight, witness tampering, a repeat.
Government caps how old an imported used car can be
Importers face a tighter rulebook from now on. Cabinet has approved regulations capping imported used cars at an age of 18 months to four years from first registration, a step meant to stop the the island turning into a dumping ground for worn out stock. Vehicles sent abroad briefly for repairs no longer need a permit to come home, as long as the original chassis stays and the Mauritius Revenue Authority, the MRA, signs off. Dealers get a clearer lane. Buyers get fewer surprises.
