"Immunity is not a gift": PM Ramgoolam defends the informer bill
"Immunity is not a gift." That was PM Ramgoolam presenting the Criminal Justice Bill on Tuesday, a law to make people inside a crime talk so the organisers, not just the foot soldiers, face court. He cited Soopramanien Kistnen, an agent of the former ruling MSM party found dead in a cane field in 2020, first called suicide, later ruled homicide.
Opposition leader Chetan Baboolall backs the idea but wants tight limits: immunity for murder, rape, crimes against children? Asked if the reopened inquiry was a cover-up, PM Ramgoolam shot back, "You think you're dealing with the MSM?"
The real test is who actually gets immunity, and for what, once the cameras leave the Assembly.

A new Rs 1,000 import fee could quietly land on your grocery bill
Every food-clearance authorisation now carries a fresh Rs 1,000 charge for importers, a levy that rarely stays with the importer. The fee looks small, it will not stay small. Spread across the thousands of consignments that feed the island, it is one more nudge upward on prices at a time when nobody needs it.
