First arrests in the Vacoas beating that killed Selven Iyempermal
Police have arrested the first suspects in the killing of Selven Iyempermal, a Vacoas man of 32 who died in the early hours of Wednesday. Six hooded men had forced their way into a house in La Caverne late on Tuesday, carrying two telescopic batons, a sabre and a baseball bat. They demanded money. Then they beat him, and hurt a friend who stepped in to help.
The autopsy traced his death to haemorrhagic shock from the injuries. Police have since questioned six people and called in Abbas Doorgahed, who runs a local centre.
Supreme Court throws out two challenges to the pension age rise
The Supreme Court has rejected two constitutional challenges to the pension reform brought in by the Finance Act 2025. Judges Aruna Narain and Iqbal Maghooa ruled the cases no longer served any purpose, since lawmakers scrapped and replaced the contested rules in August 2026. The challenge is now moot. One couple had fought the gradual rise in the pension age from 60 to 65, putting their loss at Rs 1,365,000.
The reform survives on a technicality, not a verdict on whether raising the pension age was fair.
