Bel Ombre's coastline faces three new hotels and an environmental test
Ninety arpents of state land at Bel Ombre, on the wild Savanne coast, now carry a plan for three new hotels. Before a single brick goes down, Environment Ministry has ordered a Strategic Environmental Assessment, or SEA, weighing the whole scheme at once rather than one hotel at a time. It is the first real use of that tool under the Environment Act 2024.
Not everyone is sold. The coastal group Aret Kokin Nu Laplaz calls the review a belated catch up, landing only after officials had drawn up the land. 38 farmers still work about 25 arpents here, and nearly 15 lie abandoned.
Quatre-Bornes drug raid nets Rs 2.5 million as the main suspect slips away
Officers from the Western Division drug and smuggling squad, the ADSU, stepped into a flat at Résidence Bassin in Quatre-Bornes on Wednesday afternoon and left with about Rs 2.5 million in synthetic drugs. The tally: 100.4 grams of pure synthetic cannabinoids, another 200.5 grams, 269 doses, Rs 25,000 cash and gold jewellery.
They held the suspect's partner, a woman of 31, right there. The man they came for had slipped out minutes before, and the hunt for him goes on. Timing beat the raid.
Mauritius and Britain aim for a Chagos roadmap by December
At the Commonwealth summit, PM Ramgoolam and Greater Manchester's Andy Burnham set December as the deadline for a working plan on Chagos. PM Ramgoolam also reminded the room that the Indian Ocean, not just the Atlantic, lived through slavery. A target date is not a settlement. It is still more than the Chagos file has carried in years.
