Ti-Rodrig families scrape by with no water, no power, no toilets
Charred car shells mark the way in. Barefoot toddlers pick through muddy lanes that smell of standing water, and most of the patched together homes have no latrine, no running water, no power. This is Ti-Rodrig, nearly 100,000 square metres of shacks on the edge of Port Louis, home mostly to families who left Rodrigues a decade ago believing Mauritius would be kinder.
It was not. A fresh survey of the settlement asks whether help is finally on the way. For the people who live there, the test of that promise is small and exact: a tap, a toilet, a roof that holds when the rain comes.
Mother of baby Levana defends the partner charged in her death
"I still cannot understand how a child of 13 months could die in a few hours," says Gabriella Casimir, whose daughter Levana died at the family home in Roche-Bois on 1 November.
An autopsy found a torn intestine. Her partner, a mason of 27, was arrested next day and provisionally charged with murder. He says he only rubbed the baby's sore stomach to ease her pain, and denies harm. Casimir says she watched, and believes he meant to help. A mother's word now stands against a pathologist's report.
Lawyers' revolt over Senior Counsel titles outlasts the 2025 reform
Applications for Senior Counsel and Senior Attorney, the top legal honours, opened on 3 November with a 30 November deadline, under a panel created by last year's reform. Days later the Bar is still objecting, saying the process keeps the executive too close to who gets honoured. Prestige aside, the real quarrel is over who holds the pen.
Two MBC engineers suspended as the broadcaster reshuffles
Two technical staff at the MBC, the state broadcaster, have been suspended, and their engineering department has been quietly reorganised in the days since. Several junior colleagues have moved into the vacated posts. What prompted the suspensions, and what the reshuffle is meant to settle, nobody at the station is saying out loud.
